Willie Sanders and I grew up together in the community of Little Walker in Butler, AL. We were neighbors, playmates, friends, and family. Although my name is Barbara, he always called me “Bob” just like the rest of his family. Willie Sanders was always full of life, energy, excitement, enthusiastic about living life and wanted to do great things in life. I remember his brother calling him “boy”. That was his nickname. After high school Willie Sanders left home and moved to Atlanta, GA. The funniest memory that I have of him is the day he wore hot pants and caught the bus on Gordon Rd to go downtown to school. He had on strap sandles and was a free spirit. The people on the bus gave this tall lean young man a million dollar look.He loved to dress up in the latest fashions and liked to have fun as a young man. Willie was a man of character, integrity, and a hard worker. Later, he married the love of his life and remained in Atlanta , Ga. I didn’t see him much after that. At my mom’s 80th birthday he gave a prayer and a short talk. It was then thst I realized he had made a major transformation in his life. He had accepted his calling to the ministry and became a minister/pastor of the gospel. I was so proud of my neighbor, playmate, and friend. Many years passed and I learned that he had been ill for several years. I had no idea he was not well. On my birthday, June 2 Willie Sanders took his flight and went home to live with the Lord. My heart was saddened but also glad that he would not suffer any more. He will be missed dearly. He always went to visit my mother when he went to Alabama to see his mom who preceded him in death. It’s going to be hard knowing that we will never see Willie Sanders again in this life. Rest well Willie Sanders you have earned your wings and made your mark on earth. You will never be forgotten but will always be loved . ❤️🙏🏾🙏🏾
